Alpine County is California's smallest county, by population. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 1,208. There are no incorporated places in the county. The county seat is Markleeville. Alpine County was formed in 1864 from parts of Amador, El Dorado, Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,925 km˛ (743 mi˛). 1,913 km˛ (739 mi˛) of it is land and 12 km˛ (5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.61% water.
