Mono County is a county located in the east central portion of the U.S. state of California, to east of the Sierra Nevada between Yosemite National Park and Nevada. As of 2000 the population was 12,853. The county seat is Bridgeport. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 8,111 km² (3,132 mi²). 7,885 km² (3,044 mi²) of it is land and 226 km² (87 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.79% water. As of the census2 of 2000, there were 12,853 people, 5,137 households, and 3,143 families residing in the county. The population density was 2/km² (4/mi²). There were 11,757 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 84.17% White, 0.47% Black or African American, 2.40% Native American, 1.11% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 9.51% from other races, and 2.25% from two or more races. 17.69% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
